Leeia is a journalist that works at Douglas Country Communications office. Ironically, she knows Erin Grace, which means that they share quite a few qualities in common.
Like Eric, Leeia started out her journalism career quite coincidentally. When Leeia was in high school, she wrote an essay for the school yearbook. Although her essay was not chosen as a finalist, her excellent writing skills earned her a seat a composing the school newspaper!
During Leeia's time working for the school newspaper she developed a deeper passion for writing, and subsequent, journalism.
When Leeia graduated high school, she was offered a part time job at the World Herald as a business reporter. She notes that it was very interesting working the other side of the coin; working for the high school newspaper was very relaxed and allowed her to view journalism at a local angle, while working with business was tight, much stricter, and focused in the more so private sector.
Eventually Leia moved to full time, and then a few years down the road she was offered a position at Douglas County Communications office. She loves it there!
Leeia mentioned a few takeaway points during her presentation that are very insightful and helpful. The words of wisdom that she offered were:
"If You can do journalism you can anything!"
- Journalism requires a certain finesse that teaches you how to seek out information and collaborate with other people.
"Write down your thoughts!"
- Instead of keeping momentary thoughts in your head that take up headspace, why not write them down in a memo and get those thoughts out of your head, make room for new thoughts!
"Be willing to learn and step outside of your comfort zone"
"If you have a gut feeling that makes you excited and scared at the same time, that means you have to take that opportunity!"
"Pivot, be open to new opportunities!
And her final quote:
"Journalism is like a superpower because it keeps you in the know"
- The practice of journalism teaches you how to work with and interact with other people, inform people, keep up with local news and events, and most importantly, it helps to get you out of your comfort zone!
