On Tuesday, November 23rd, mayor Jean Stothert revealed plans to relocate the W. Dale Clark library downtown.
Mayor Jean Stothert announced on Tuesday that the W. Dale Clark library will soon be moving from its current location at 215 S 15th street, Omaha NE, 68102, just four blocks south, to its new location at 14th street between Douglas and Farnam. The renovation of the new building is estimated to cost 3 million, while the cost to transfer everything to the new building is estimated to cost 360,000.
The current building that houses the library, which was built in 1976, is very dated, inefficient, underutilized, and costly to operate.
"Replacement of the main library should be seriously considered," a report documented in 2017 said.
Research has shown that libraries bring significant economic growth and revitalization with them, notably because they are a resource for residents.
"The downtown area needs something like this," quoted Mike Kennedy, Board of Trustees President.
Once the remodel is done, the new library building will stand 3 stories tall, with the first two levels featuring walk in library services.
All materials will be transferred from the old building to the new one, as well as all administrative staff and employees.
"Once finished with the remodel, it will be a very nice building," concluded mayor Jean Stothert.
Questions
1. How is this project being funded?
2. When was the building made (that the library will move into)?
3. Once the move and remodeling are complete, what new features will there be for the library?
4. Will customers of the previous location be able to check out books at the new location? Will accounts transfer?
5. Why is the library only moving to somewhere 4 blocks away? Isn't that a bit of a waste of allocations?
