Erin Grace has worked with journalism for over 20 years and has a lot of experience and knowledge in the field.
Erin Grace is a great example of a person who were not sure what they wanted to do for a career, but somehow a career found them!
Fresh out of college, Erin secured a job at Teach America, which is a national organization that provides education to low income and disadvantaged students.
She eventually was desperate and applied for a slew of jobs, some which included journalism jobs. Erin was offered a job in the journalism sector and she took it. Erin did not think she would like journalism that much, but she grew to love it.
At the Omaha World Herald, Erin worked as an investigative journalist and a news writer.
Due to the areas of journalism she was working in, Erin got herself into counter terrorism work and eventually left her job at the Omaha World Herald.
Erin does not know why she quit the Omaha World Herald, she loved working there. It was unclear in class is she has since returned to her preferred job or not.
Discussion
As an IT Innovation major, I feel that I am disconnected from journalism, although at times I feel connected with it, I think this is one of those times I feel connected with it.
One of the class I am required to take (3 times) for my major is called IT Symposium, which is a seminar based class featuring IT Innovation alumni. Jumping forward to the final assignments for each class, students have had to summarize common themes and concepts. One of the most common themes I have noticed is that most people in the program do not have a career goal or certain job in mind after college; the right job just finds them. In that sense, everything will play out as it is meant to be. Thinking about that, it is reassuring to know that I will, most likely, not have to think to hard about a specific job or whatnot, it will find me!
The above situation relates to journalism and what Erin has gone through!
Erin mentioned a very powerful and almost lifechanging quote
"Don't give up on storytelling, it reminds us of our humanity"
